U.S. Taxes

As a non-U.S. tax payer in the U.S. markets, you may be asking yourself about U.S. taxation and how it works. At TD Ameritrade Singapore, we have you covered.

If you are not a U.S. citizen and not required to file a U.S. tax return, you are considered a foreign investor by the U.S. tax codes. As such, certain income types are subject to U.S. withholding. Please review the Foreign Investors and U.S. Taxes Disclosure.

Dividends and Interest Income
TD Ameritrade  Singapore will withhold on applicable distribution income at the time of payment as discussed in the disclosure document provided above. In general, additional U.S. withholding or taxes will not be levied after the year end as all taxes due were already remitted to the Internal Revenue Service ("IRS"). Reportable distribution income earned is reported on Form 1042-S.

Capital Gains
Gains earned from trading activity are typically not subject to U.S. withholding or taxation, however your country of residence may require reporting of activity done in the U.S. markets.

Certifying Non-US Tax Payer Status
Upon account opening, a W-8BEN and other documentation is needed to certify non-US tax status. This W-8BEN is valid for three calendar years after the signature date, unless owner information changes causing the form to become invalid prematurely. TD Ameritrade Singapore sends notifications prior to the forms expiration to ensure your account is in good order.

U.S. Estate Proceedings and Taxation
Certain assets owned by an investor outside the United States at their time of death may be subject to U.S. estate taxation. The estate executor is required to file a United States Estate (and Generation-Skipping Transfer) Tax Return Estate of nonresident not a citizen of the United States. The estate tax is imposed on the transfer of assets therefore the return (IRS form 706-NA) is necessary in order to move assets or funds from the decedent's account. Additional information may be found on the IRS website under Form 706-NA.
